Weekly Photo Challenge: Illumination

While at lunch today I saw this light effect from a way-cool fixture over a table - I think the folks thought I was nuts when I asked them if they could hold their plates off the table...just for a second. HaHaHa. this photo blogging bit has got a hold of me :)

The State Fair of Texas Daily Cap(s) (281)

Food at the State Fair of Texas is all about the 70-year old business of making Fletcher Corny Dogs….

And a dish of ‘Fried Jambalaya’ wins this year’s Best Taste of the State Fair

You know you’re in Texas, at the State Fair when the hood of the golf carts are decorated as one would expect…..

We grow our hats big down here….

And purses in the shape of quilted fish…

Fried Mexican Fire Crackers….

Orange flamingos at the Lagoon await their evening “Chinese Lantern” show….

Happened upon the Pillsbury pie judging – I LIKE PIE! but I would be danged if these ladies wouldn’t give me a fork for a taste….

The wall of ribbon-winning jellies, jams, pickled whatevers, and the like….

Oh geez…you figured out quickly your in the textile area of the Creative Arts Building when their golf cart is covered in…in…in yarn stuff

Dancing in the streets! (The Children Alpine Dancers) – made me break out in true Von Trapp family song “Edelvise, Edelvise…hum hum (couldn’t remember the words, nor could the folks on either side of me)

Fried Mac-n-Chese Sliders gets the ‘Most Creative’ food pick of the Fair

I wonder how Mom and Little Brother convinced Dad and Big Brother to push them around the State Fair….

Barbecue Texas style is done off a flat bed semi-tractor trailer…at the front door of the Midway.

The Chicken Fried Cactus Bites…won’t do those again

With the main Fairgrounds being 60-70 years old, you can find some pretty neat Art-Deco detailing in/on/around the buildings….

Big Tex saying “Howdy Folks” and mounted police plodding through the Fairgrounds!

A nice finish to the day: Deep-Fried Divine Chocolate Tres Leches Cake…

The Greek Daily Cap(s) (274)

The 56th Annual Greek Food Festival of Dallas! Let’s Dance!

And dance!

And dance in shoes with pom-poms on the toes (and please note I’m not the only one taking pictures of them)…

And then let’s dance some more…..

Then we eat! (Loukaniko Sandwich and Dolmathes)

And then we eat some more! (Greek coffee and Baklava)

And some folks, besides the dancers, were in full costume….

A bit ominous were their costumes if you ask me….

But let’s not forget the Police officer…who danced between the 6 lanes of traffic, was in full costume himself, and decided to eat by starting the grill…in the middle of the road (and right next to the truck’s gas tank!). Grand time had being Greek for the afternoon!

The Monday NYC Daily Cap(s) (226)

Of all the trips to NYC I’ve done (but I haven’t been as many as that implies y’all), I’ve never had a Black & White….hmmm…having one at the airport still counts, right?

See ya later my FD…she is a special part of me, even when she allows me to buy $10 street-vendor sunglasses to wear around the City with her. “Love ya Sweets!”

The Simple Daily Cap(s) (172)

Appreciating the remnants of a dwindling cloud bank at sunset…a time of the day deserving of a simple deep breath moment….

A time when driving a car (or truck) was a much simpler task…no cup holders, no vents, no USB ports, no tinted windshields, no navigation systems, no plush seats, no digital speedometer/odometer, and no need to Armor-All the dash…just check the fluids, get in, and drive!

“Stop” for a minute and take in the simple pleasure of a sunset….

Simply the best fruit – Rainier Cherries for dinner desert!

The Kansas Harvest Daily Cap(s) (161)

Harvesting apricots with an old harvest basket pole…still works like a champ!

A more modern(?) way of harvesting apricots: shake a tree limb and try catching the falling fruit in a bed sheet (and in this case, the good one do land close to the tree)…FGs Lincoln sure didn’t care much for this method (no…he didn’t get “beaned”)

Wheat harvest is well underway in north central Kansas….

The pie cherries were very near ready…maybe another few days is all that’s needed (they were oh-my-gosh tart – notice the one missing…hmmmm, who could have done such a thing?)

The BBQ Daily Cap(s) (155)

I stopped by our neighborhood Papa Murphy’s after church this morning…figured I would throw a pizza on the grill, and then get dinner ready

With the pizza cooking, the rack of pork ribs that was marinated last night with a Raspberry Chipotle rub (and then braised a vinegar-peanut oil-cayenne pepper concoction on the ribs every 20 minutes) was pulled from the refrig…got that ready for the grill as well

The pizza (lunch) came off, the ribs went on for a slow 3 1/2 hour cook…1 hour on the top rack with the pizza stone left on the grill.

After 2 1/2 hours, the rbis are moved to the grill and the pizza stone pulled. The Jalapeño and Poblano peppers, along with the onions, joined the ribs on the grill…

3 hours into the cook and I’ll be danged if these don’t look good (the ribs were “resting” about now)

I’m thinking not much can top a Sunday dinner than grilling Baby Back Ribs, a Poblano pepper, homemade tater salad (new recipe BTW), baked bacon-wrapped 1015 sweet onion, and fresh mixed greens as a salad. Who’s hungry – I have leftovers!

The Leave-No-Scottie-Inside Daily Cap(s) (154)

The Royals – Princess Zoey here – were lounging about the living room today, staying in the AC instead of the 93º temperatures….

Mackie Queen of Scots will always give me that annoyed look when the camera is out (no matter if its the big Canon or the little FugiFilm…she indulges me only for a few shots, so I gotta be quick with her)

But there is one way to get at least the Queen out-of-doors…feed her watermelon! She absolutely loves this summertime treat. She recognizes the melon when you bring it in the door and will start bumping your leg. When its being cut, she either sits up and begs or will scratch the beegeebers out of your leg….

The Princess on the other hand, is a bit less enthusiastic about the treat (although there is no way the Queen will get any of her portion of her melon whether she eats it or not). Regardless, it got their lazy butts off the couch and to the backyard

The TGIF Daily Cap(s) (153)

Good Friday morning

The Friday morning gathering of a bunch of quacks….

The first Friday of every June is National Donut Day – shouldn’t that be every day?

The spray park opens on this particular Friday…

A sunflowery Friday morning….

A cool looking shack along the side of the rode on a Friday morning drive-about

I can shoot overexposed butterfly pictures on any day, not just Fridays. (but there is something dramatically appealing about this photo, agreed?)

Even when you’re expected, wandering about the ball park on a Friday morning taking pictures (and not just of goofy shots of me in front of odd signs or eating donuts in the parking lot) certainly brings out inquisitive folks (and cops)…

A Friday morning breakfast picnic at sunrise….nothing beats that

The Friday evening nightcap at Rooster’s….now let’s see here, hmmmm….donut in the morning then a cheeseburger, pulled pork nachos, and a cold beer tonight. No wonder I’ve got a gut ache and my tonnage-loss program has been significantly compromised.

The Backyard BBQ Daily Cap(s) (120)

Gang...it was the Royal Scotties, my Canon, and The Daily Cap(s) that took a back burner to slow-grillin' a rack of Raspberry Chipolte rubbed spare ribs, Broccoli-Dill slaw from scratch, glazed baby carrots, handmade guacamole and blue corn tortilla chips, and....

Grilled Corn on the Cob and always a few jalapeños make their way to the grill - love my new Char-Griller 'Akorn' Kamado Kooker grill (pizza and biscuits cooked on it last weekend). Deb, OFNi Sarah, and Jerry this afternoon got feed after their quick weekend road trip. I had no idea it would take me all afternoon....

Some things just aren’t right

I will be picking a fight with my many good family and friends in Kansas with this post. But even so, I think they will admit they’re not accustomed to authentic Mexican/Tex-Mex cuisine.

Found these grocery products on a recent trip to the great state of wheat and sunflowers…next trip up I’m bringing Texas tamales and enchiladas from Silva’s (in Lake Dallas).

So, so, so wrong….(isn’t this really called green peppers in vinegar?)

And this Email Humor Received (EHR) comes from my good friend Ron…

In the same festive spirit of the wishful holiday’s good tidings, please consider your culinary endulgence based on the rationale given below…it is a logic that I’ve practiced (perfected) in Christmases past…believe you me:

My little cupcake

December 15th IS National Cupcake Day.

And since I’ve officially blown my tonnage-loss program right out the kitchen window this holiday season, I’m eating from a selection of chocolates from the See’s Candy Christmas gift received yesterday from OFGaPal JaiJai instead…and when I get home, the William & Sonoma Peppermint Bark awaits my palette (thanks Deb!). Faired Well at the State Fair

Big Tex and a mighty fine "Howdy Folks" awaits fair-goers as they arrive each and every year

Sunday…I took a trip to The Great State Fair of Texas!

What a glorious day it was – breezy, upper 80°, and when you’re one of the first to arrive, parking was easy, convenient, and close to the entrance gate!

Each year the State Fair is an intentional destination. I wouldn’t be completely honest if I said my primary reasoning going is for the Auto Show.

I go for the people watching!

I go for the live entertainment on stage (several venues around the fairgrounds)!

I go for free ice cream cone and the give-away bread sampling at the Dairy/Grain Building!

I go to marvel at the wonderful Art Deco buildings scattered about the fairgrounds!

But mostly, I go for the traditional food of the State Fair as well as each year’s must-have foods!
