What Say You

Perhaps an appropriate song, especially after Tuesday’s politics.

I’ve always loved this song with its catch-tune and great lyrics…I sing it well in my truck and if no one is listening (but I sure get odd looks thrown my way).

If I silence (or lip-sync) my singing, you get the whole lot better version performed by 2 icons of the music business: Travis Tritt and John Mellencamp.

I’m not going to criticize what I can’t understand…

speak my heart and bear my soul, I don’t like lies, I would rather know the truth…

I know I’m not always right and I don’t think I’m better than you…”

A knock on the door, or one on the head

Guys, this is the kind of stuff where you either re-introduce yourself to all the single malts in the house, or you go to church.

If you recall, a couple weeks ago I did a quick post on Erma Bombeck. It was about how, after watching a PBS program of her life, it spoke in such a way as for me to better understand the attraction my mom had for the lady. So here I sit again tonight, moved to sniffles and teared eyes (damn you PBS) watching yet another favorite of mom’s, Chet Atkins, and coming to very similar conclusions with this man as I did with Erma.

Something is going on here gang and I’m not sure how to go about wrapping my arms around it. I could use some help, but if I’m drowning here, don’t be tossing me rocks….

Hallelujah

Last night’s televised “hope for haiti now” fundraiser was moving at times and inspirational. Besides the obvious need for the event, the music was a true delight. I celebrate and support both the cause and artistry of the night.

Being one that loves music and sometimes wishes a singing career would have been in the “chords”, I’ve learned to appreciate artists that perform with their heart and soul, and are not afraid to throw their emotions to the end of a long sleeve with songs that touch them in some way.

Last night and live, Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris had the performance of the night with their moving rendition of ‘Hallelujah”.

“Hallelujah’ is a song that can take center stage all by itself. The artist merely puts a melody and emotion to the words. I’ve sang this song myself, without much talent, but with conviction of one voice with a congregation in song knowing the stage is sometimes, something more than where the microphones are placed.

I went to bed last night thinking of the song and its lyrics…I got up this morning with it still on my mind. ‘Hallelujah’ has been a favorite of mine for some time, as it has been for many an artist as well. In searching iTunes and YouTube this morning, so many good versions of the song were found, done by professionals and amateurs alike, and performed in several languages. Bebo

Bebo Norman, a favorite contemporary Christian artist of mine having 30-songs/1.9-hours worth of music on my iPhone.

I find his music to be great in that it will bring you back to where you’re supposed to be (not to mention easy to sing along with – you listen, you watch…you will be singing harmony with him before you know it).

Hope you enjoy the YouTube links to a few of his songs that have 5-star ratings on my playlist…. Continue reading “Bebo”

Sit back with a pint and give a listen to this lass

I’m sharing a couple YouTube videos of a lady I’ve been listening to for some time now; since about I first time Enya became a part of my CD library – that goes back a ways. OK, so I might be a bit gushy, sentimental, perhaps we’ll call it “unique” with my musical preferences (I can see many of you raising one eyebrow in question of my “taste” about now). Rest assured its my heritage coming through in my older age…maybe :).

Actually the FD says I’m quite eclectic with my taste. And I will say I take a certain amount of pleasure in her observation of that. You should hear the diverse genre of music in my MP3 sometime….

These songs below are Easy Listening ballad music from Ireland. This, my dear friends, is 1) music with an understandable and poetic message (for a change), 2) single-malt scotch-sipping singing-stuff, and 3) music that you might find yourself humming the melody or picking up on the chorus lyrics and joining in, maybe under your breathe at the very least.

I do that. You know when no one is listening, I’m really pretty damn good with my karaoke, if I do say so myself. In particular, imagine CUTster (any guesses with that acronym?) singing along quite loudly with a young pretty Irish lady, in full Irish brogue (attempted at least), with ear phones in and volume high, and Mackie Queen of Scots dancing a jig at my feet loving every minute of it (and she’s the only one that tolerates my singing). It’s a sight and sound for sore…senses, and my singing certainly won’t cure what ails ya laddy.

Ladies and gentlemen, for your listening pleasure; from the lovely green isle singing two of my favorites, the incomparable Ms. Mary Black: Continue reading “Sit back with a pint and give a listen to this lass”
