The paved half of the trail at Willow Grove Park (Lake Dallas Texas)
Hey y’all! Today is National Trails Day…can you believe it? Have you gone out and hiked or biked a trail yet?
Well I did. This morning I hip-wiggled into my flattering padded tush biking shorts, pumped up the tires and took off for a 6-mile ride on a City trail along the lake edge.
It will never cease to amaze me the things you can see and hear when you’re not motoring. I will always appreciate the natural stuff and truly let its grasp take hold of me. That is until I happen upon a snake (or vice versa).
If that were to happen (a snake and me encounter), well…I’m either going to pity the snake for the panicked wild man wrath about to be unleashed upon it…after the fact, or if someone is with me heaven forbid they get in my way during a hasty, Katy-bar-the-door, asses-n-elbows, Monty Python “run away” retreat. Did I ever mention when confronted by a snake, the kind of snake makes no difference, this blogger can run a whole lot faster than he can bicycle? “Drop the bicycle and RUUUUUNNNNNN!”
But there were no snakes seen today (and you thought you were gonna get a Tim-got-scared snake story didn’t ya? HA!).
Being in the professional practice of creating, preserving, managing, and enhancing outdoor spaces, and knowing that a good understanding of human psychology is as much necessary as having pure talent, it is common knowledge that 11 out of 10 people prefer the sight, sound, touch and taste of water in their everyday life.
With this statement, I mean something a bit more intimate in our romance, longing and preference for the sight/sound/sensation comfort of water…something other than the shower, brushing your teeth, or a toilet flush.
“No man is good enough to be a dog” – an old saying Pastor Tommy recited this morning in his sermon at Denton Bible as he was speaking of the loyalty and devotion had by Mary Magdalene for Christ…
Most of you know, or have figured out dogs have curled up next to my heart since I was a young boy. You might imagine then when Pastor Tommy told the story of Greyfriars Bobby to close his Easter service it tugged on my heart strings much like it did Tommy’s.
Leftovers from St. Patrick’s Day…but these are not a one day recitation. All year long they are with meaning:
“May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.”
“May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live”
“May flowers always line your path and sunshine light your day. May songbirds serenade you every step along the way. May a rainbow run beside you in a sky that’s always blue. And may happiness fill your heart each day your whole life through.” Continue reading “Irish Blessings”
“Harvey and I have things to do… we sit in the bars… have a drink or two… play the juke box. Very soon the faces of all the other people turn towards me and they smile. They say: ‘We don’t know your name, mister, but you’re a very nice fellow.’ Harvey and I warm ourselves in these golden moments. We came as strangers – soon we have friends. They come over. They sit with us. They drink with us. They talk to us. Continue reading “A little bit of envy in the best of us”
Sunday’s sermon at Denton Bible Church was particularly good today. Pastor Tommy Nelson was on his game, or maybe it only seemed that way since what he was saying, spoke to(of) me…but then I have yet to find a sermon where Tommy was not on his game.
Today was about bitter people, their unhappiness; how God does not want one to elevate oneself, nor become self-righteous, arrogant, offended, vengeful, and judgmental as that is what causes the bitterness and lets Satan into your life. He assured us all that “the upholding of the kingdom of God does not rest on me (you, us)”. Those causes of such things…well just “let it go”. Know: God can and will handle it for me (you, us) instead. And in so doing (“letting it go”), those that can hold their tongue are truly blessed – those that cannot are a curse on man in His image. Despite the fact of having a blog, trying to write a post-a-day all year long, and linking it to Facebook and Twitter, I really don’t mean to go on and on about the life and times of…well…Mackie and Zoey.
I’m probably the first in line to get somewhat disinterested at those posts that each day describe the length of toenails, the loudness of steps others take when you’re sick or still hung over from the night before, or the amount of Friday donuts consumed by a least favorite person at work…for example. So this week I do it again.
No one will convince me otherwise: you create your own interest in life and you alone choose to share it with humor, pity, blandness, annoyance, or not at all. Some might say I’m doing a self-description (did I mention conceit, self-infatuation, and boastfulness?), but whatever it is, here goes my week log – whether it is interesting or not, is up to you: Continue reading “A week (weak) of interest”
“This is my “depressed stance.” When you’re depressed, it makes a lot of difference how you stand. The worst thing you can do is straighten up and hold your head high because then you’ll start to feel better. If you’re going to get any joy out of being depressed, you’ve got to stand like this.” – Charlie Brown Continue reading You’re a good man CB
It’s World Plumbing Day….the theme is this: Plumbing Vital to Global Health. The organization (and day) exists to make us feel better in more ways than one.
Who knew? Today is/was Chocolate Mint Day…it just has to be a day celebrated by all, at the very least by those amongst us with a burgeoning waistline and having at least three dental appointments already scheduled in advance this year (that would be so like me in it’s description). Continue reading “Minty Sweet”
From my dear friend Elizabeth, I get this EHR (Email Humor Received)…and the photos are not mine – if I knew who they belong to, I would give them the props as they are just too cute.
Clear skies, 70°, and no sound of the neighbor’s lawn mower puts one’s butt in a patio chair in the back yard, dogs at your feet, a donned hat to shade the eyes (or protect the bald noggin), and you’ve blown the dust off a fine book worthy of an unseasonably warm January day read. Not too many books out there that fits that bill – maybe only one other… Continue reading “Aldo had it all together”
Sad news came over the weekend: the life juices for Jack LaLanne stopped flowing on Saturday. He was 96. Fitness and non-fitness folks alike lost a true champion. He was a pioneer in fitness from the 1960’s, and was still going “strong” until his death.
According to a National Geographic, Yellowstone has an upset tummy. That’s all we need – a political climate in chaos, an economy that continues to stink up the place, and now a rebellious park with a tempermental disposition. And here I was all worried about global warming. Continue reading “Yell, Yell, Yellow Yellowstone”
I took a whole bunch of pictures…I’m talking a big ol’ bunch of pictures last year (and the year before had around 15,000 snapped for that matter).
Somewhere in the neighborhood of 19,000 pictures are stored on my computer (and backed up on two different portable hard drives) that have a 2010 date. So what the heck, I took took a stab at a Top 50 list. Let me know what you think.
