The Daily Cap (15)

With so much going on at daybreak - geese flying, fishermen fishing, the sun a rising, a chilly nip to the morning air - am I the only one that likes to, as the day awakens and a sunrise warms your face, plug in the headphones and listen to the "String Quintet In e Major: Minuet"? Oh yeah, see there, I figured as much....

Kettle Chilling

Man ‘o man. When a guy is used to 107 degree weather for the last 65 days living in Texas and he goes off to Ontario and wakes up to rainy, damp 45 degree weather…that’s chill’!

I bundled up with just about everything I brought. 2 pairs of socks, 2 pairs of pants, 1 undershirt, 1 shortsleeve shirt, 1 long sleeve shirt, a vest, and then a rain suit…and I still had a chill this morning boating to the first fishing spot.

Another great time on the English River. Fishing was better than yesterday. Shore lunch was “Franks” (Walleye fillet fast-marinated in Frank’s hot sauce, then breaded with 2 parts flour 1 part cornmeal…and then fried in as much lard as the pan holds). Oh good heaven’s my waist line is already expanding.

BTW, the turtle is a Snapping Turtle. Frank (one of our guides) told us we needed to leave him alone (for obvious reasons apparently). The Small Mouth Bass of Tony’s…that won him a Halley’s Trophy Angler Cap for it measuring 18.5″. Maybe that will make up for the one he lost in the lake yesterday.

Today’s pictures come from all 3 May boys…

Here we go again

Done deal!

Thanks to a simple email question from OFSIL Becky, it got the line cast and look what happened. Everyone got called and sure as a Canadian fishing license, father and sons are trekking back to Canada to try and catch more trophy Walleye this fall!

The four of us will be packing tackle and poles and head off to Halley’s Camps in Ontario!

And even better…OFB Tony gets to join us this time!  Continue reading “Here we go again”

Ms. Shirley’s algae farm

Facebooking for advice, my OFAIL (that’s One Favorite Aunt In Law, not literally “O-FAIL”…I maybe should think up another acronym huh?) has a recently built, do-it-yourself fish pond at her rural home. And now she has, yup, the dreaded algae.

Sight unseen, I think she has two issues here. One is her new fish pond has algae and the other is her new fish pond gets algae. Algae needs but 2 things to grow: sunlight and nutrients.

Return from a Paradise

So the Blog has suffered some neglect of late. I’ve missed two weekends of college football – ughhhhhhh; one week’s worth of sarcasm opportunities have escaped these pages; Mackie Queen of Scots still lays across my lap in an effort to not let me go anywhere again without her.

But it was worth enduring all those daily-grind withdrawals. My co-workers, my heart, soul and sanity, and most importantly my family needed me to go away for a while on a trip to Canada…with Dad and OFB Terry.IMG_3951 I’m so glad we did just that.

This vacation was bought and planned for nearly a year by the sons (brothers). It was a combination Christmas, Birthday, and Thanks-for-being-our-Dad gift for a 75th birthday and milestone celebration of 50+ years of fatherhood. So we went fishing, damn it! Be back at it on Friday week

I’m going fishing…in Canada…with my Dad…and OFB TR…we will be at a place that knows no internet…Walleye and Northerns will be caught and consumed in considerable quantities…I won’t have time to blog, nor be able to…until I get back…then you guys get a look at all the pictures I plan to take, and the stories I expect to tell (or make up). OFBB Jai Jai and OFSIL Bec – you two try not to let the Cubbies and the Jaybirds lose their first pre-season game tomorrow.  And while you’re at it, watch out over my Mildcats would ya? The Saint has … Continue reading Be back at it on Friday week
