The attraction

Being in the professional practice of creating, preserving, managing, and enhancing outdoor spaces, and knowing that a good understanding of human psychology is as much necessary as having pure talent, it is common knowledge that 11 out of 10 people prefer the sight, sound, touch and taste of water in their everyday life.

With this statement, I mean something a bit more intimate in our romance, longing and preference for the sight/sound/sensation comfort of water…something other than the shower, brushing your teeth, or a toilet flush.

Gerbil DSL

Stormy weather has the gerbils that run the wheel that powers my DSL service hiding under the couch tonight. They have sought shelter much like the Royals have tonight (both in bed with me…one at my feet, the other laying across my waist). It is times like these that make you shake your head in sadness at how dependent we’ve (I’ve) become on our instant access to the www in our lives. I might try to find a paperback book and read for a change…might even take hand written notes. Egads! Continue reading Gerbil DSL

A best friend

“No man is good enough to be a dog” – an old saying Pastor Tommy recited this morning in his sermon at Denton Bible as he was speaking of the loyalty and devotion had by Mary Magdalene for Christ…

Most of you know, or have figured out dogs have curled up next to my heart since I was a young boy. You might imagine then when Pastor Tommy told the story of Greyfriars Bobby to close his Easter service it tugged on my heart strings much like it did Tommy’s.

The story is this: Continue reading “A best friend”

Gassed out

Among the so many things we get upset about with the media – the economy, politics, story exaggerations (dare I say fabrications), etc. – we certainly don’t need their help giving oil companies the OK-they’re-ready to raise gas prices to $4 per gallon and more.

Politically, the rising price of fuel might give reason for liberals to rejoice as it reinforces their “green” chorus; conservatives might applaud the capitalistic ventures…both will stand at the water cooler and complain about the cost of the fillup however.

Oh so pleasant

Sunday’s sermon at Denton Bible Church was particularly good today. Pastor Tommy Nelson was on his game, or maybe it only seemed that way since what he was saying, spoke to(of) me…but then I have yet to find a sermon where Tommy was not on his game.

Today was about bitter people, their unhappiness; how God does not want one to elevate oneself, nor become self-righteous, arrogant, offended, vengeful, and judgmental as that is what causes the bitterness and lets Satan into your life. He assured us all that “the upholding of the kingdom of God does not rest on me (you, us)”.  Those causes of such things…well just “let it go”. Know: God can and will handle it for me (you, us) instead. And in so doing (“letting it go”), those that can hold their tongue are truly blessed – those that cannot are a curse on man in His image. Texas’ birthday

Texas turned 174 years old today….

To my Texas blog readers: who amongst you can answer this Texas trivia?

Ah heck y’all, why limit it only to the Texas folks? Can anybody answer these questions? I don’t even know if I remember some of the answers!

Does anyone really want to…answer 49 questions? I thought about listing 174 questions, but I do have another life (I think) besides this blog.

The commercials and their game

So many times before, the Super Bowl commercials have out-played the teams at the NFL’s biggest event. I heard a statistic last week, from a media source I can no longer remember, that more than half the television viewers of the Super Bowl watch primarily to see the commercials. Now I sit down each year to watch the game, and will admit, many games have caused me to get refills, food, and frequent the commode during football play and be back in my seat in time for the commercials.

This year we were treated with a good game of football and commercials some are saying were lame. I say “hold onto your wallet that’s Jerry Jones walking by”. Wanna know my votes? Continue reading “The commercials and their game”

Aldo had it all together

Clear skies, 70°, and no sound of the neighbor’s lawn mower puts one’s butt in a patio chair in the back yard, dogs at your feet, a donned hat to shade the eyes (or protect the bald noggin), and you’ve blown the dust off a fine book worthy of an unseasonably warm January day read. Not too many books out there that fits that bill – maybe only one other… Continue reading “Aldo had it all together”

Of all the days today could be…

…it ends up being Squirrel Appreciation Day. Gee Whiz I missed it. Yup, I had my slingshot at the ready and could have taken aim.

The National Wildlife Federation came up with the nuisance idea. What were they thinking? Huffington Post gave it some press – the photos at the bottom of the webpage link are worth checking out regardless of your tolerance level for the ornery mammals.

New Year, New Look, New Directions

Happy 2010 to most everyone (just kidding…). It comes at a time on renewed enthusiasm and knowing the need to “finish” is most important…as was the teaching/sermon today Denton Bible Church (that will be a “Thump” post coming soon). So I wish you celebration, good times, and prosperity beyond the pocketbook. New Year. Continue reading “New Year, New Look, New Directions”
