A knock on the door, or one on the head

Guys, this is the kind of stuff where you either re-introduce yourself to all the single malts in the house, or you go to church.

If you recall, a couple weeks ago I did a quick post on Erma Bombeck. It was about how, after watching a PBS program of her life, it spoke in such a way as for me to better understand the attraction my mom had for the lady. So here I sit again tonight, moved to sniffles and teared eyes (damn you PBS) watching yet another favorite of mom’s, Chet Atkins, and coming to very similar conclusions with this man as I did with Erma.

Something is going on here gang and I’m not sure how to go about wrapping my arms around it. I could use some help, but if I’m drowning here, don’t be tossing me rocks….

Our Sunday Guess Who

Looky here – we got to see OFGrNi (Madison) and OFGrNe (Mick) today. It is always so much fun, and a treat to see these kids.

It’s easy to see why I can take 100 pictures of these two – which I did this afternoon – in a matter of 1 hour.

Really, it’s for the “better”

As I sat down last night to catch a few minutes of PBS before the 10pm news, I picked up on a show “already in progress”. It was a 30-minute filler mini-documentary on the late humorist and journalist Erma Bombeck. This show caught my attention in particular because my Mom adored Erma’s writings and humor.

Please understand, Mom would speak often about an Erma story read from the local newspaper…and occasionally clip a column that somehow spoke to her, only to give us boys and dad something to ponder the “why this article” as we went through Mom’s personal items months after she died.

I thought, what better way to gain some insight into the mindset of both Erma and Mom than to give a listen to this short television program.

The FD Milestone

I got up this morning, put a couple eye drops in each eye, dressed for a Saturday, sat down with the iPhone and texted the FD. Within 1 minute of the event, her actual birthday anniversary, best wishes from a proud ‘pops” was sent.

It was a morning routine not much different than in 1980 except I had a much smaller girth then and I have a much better job now.

The FD was born on a Wednesday, 30 years ago today…at 6:57 a.m.. She has been Sunshine in my life ever since.

Bettering

As yet another new page to my Blog is added, please know it’s a public way to journey in trying to be a better and smarter kind of guy. Some of you know I enjoy the business, management, self-improvement, rah-rah type books, so I’m going to capture some of the advice from those books, here on the blog. I’m also doing other self-improvement experience besides the books (that might be kind of scary if you think too much about it). If you’re so inclined, over on the left margin (of the Blog page) you will see the page Better to click. In … Continue reading Bettering

Those were the Days my friend…

…I thought they’d never end.

And they haven’t!

Just when I think my patience is well self-managed and my eye for photography is on the right track, a link or email gets sent that reaches out and smacks me in the nose saying ‘you have a long way to go buck-a-roo’. So much is the case with Michael Paul Smith, an artist in his own right with a knack for drawing gasps, making heads shake, and causing rapid eye blinking in amazement (maybe a little bit of disbelief as well). EHR: The New Orleans Saints Super Bowl Drinking Game

Email Humor Received (EHR) from _______ (I’m reserving that  name for now).

Mind you, neither Katrina nor the Haiti earthquake are laughing, to-be-taken-lightly catastrophies…but this game idea is funny. So lighten up, laugh at this and let it be my politically incorrect posting of the day/week/month/year.

This game suggestion reminds me of kegger softball, or the audience experience at the Rocky Horror Picture Show (although I’ve never had the “horror” of watching the show in a theatre).

This is also a classic example of the media ramming their agendas down the viewers throats to the gag point people start making jokes of it all…and speaking of throats, have a beverage of your choice in celebration of a Saints Super Bowl win….

BTW, the picture credit is not mine, but I list it as: SCOTT THRELKELD / THE TIMES-PICAYUNE Cousins Benji Soued, 4, of Boca Raton, FL, left, and Benjamin Soued, 2, of New York play football during a pre-Super Bowl party Sunday, February 7, 2010, at El Palacio Sports Hotel Convention Center. More than 500 Saints fans partied then marched to Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL

Looking for the bare necessities

I’ve enjoyed a little back-scratching fun the past couple days with “Doppelgänger” week on Facebook…the week you change you profile picture to a famous person who’ve been told you look like.  Thanks be to FD’s high school chum Nicole, as it was her “status” posting of the event that got this all started with me. So I now have a new and temporary Facebook profile picture….

Well here’s the biggest reason why my picture-pick is so animated: since I was told many years ago when FD and FS gave back to me, the teasing I dished out to them, Disney’s ol’ Baloo the Bear (from Jungle Book…sorry for the “duh” moment guys) came first to mind. FD and FS said I was Baloo the Bear, maybe because of my shape, size, personality, singing talent, and/or back-scratching techniques, I guess. So now the teasing has started up again, this time with the Facebook “Friends”…I probably had it coming alright. No word yet from FD or FS….

Every sunset brings the promise of a new dawn

The title is a quote I’ve long since forgotten its origin, but for any of us needing some tranquility in our lives, perhaps a few repeat chants of the quote and witness to a spectacular sunrise might make for a better start to your day. Stop and smell the roses; Stop and take in a sunrise, or a sunset; Stop and hug a tree (and a loved one) sometime soon.  Continue reading “Every sunset brings the promise of a new dawn”

Luney Time

DFW experienced a lunar halo tonight. Buddy and girrrrrrrl friend K-Berr did a Facebook status so I grabbed my Canon and tripod and took a few quick shots (not very good ones I might add).

I then googled “ring around the moon” and came up with some acceptable explanation from the Farmers Almanac about “hexagon-shaped ice crystals, it is bent at a 22 degree angle, creating a halo 22 degrees in radius (or 44 degrees in diameter)”. And to that I said “cool”.

Hallelujah

Last night’s televised “hope for haiti now” fundraiser was moving at times and inspirational. Besides the obvious need for the event, the music was a true delight. I celebrate and support both the cause and artistry of the night.

Being one that loves music and sometimes wishes a singing career would have been in the “chords”, I’ve learned to appreciate artists that perform with their heart and soul, and are not afraid to throw their emotions to the end of a long sleeve with songs that touch them in some way.

Last night and live, Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris had the performance of the night with their moving rendition of ‘Hallelujah”.

“Hallelujah’ is a song that can take center stage all by itself. The artist merely puts a melody and emotion to the words. I’ve sang this song myself, without much talent, but with conviction of one voice with a congregation in song knowing the stage is sometimes, something more than where the microphones are placed.

I went to bed last night thinking of the song and its lyrics…I got up this morning with it still on my mind. ‘Hallelujah’ has been a favorite of mine for some time, as it has been for many an artist as well. In searching iTunes and YouTube this morning, so many good versions of the song were found, done by professionals and amateurs alike, and performed in several languages. EHR: Carson Show-George Gobel With Friends

This Email Humor Received came from Jayne…I think.

This guest appearance is an absolute riot – Gobel, Dean Martin, Bob Hope, and Carson. I sent this to my family email network already but it’s worth posting. I laugh as hard each time I watch it, and I proudly want to claim “today’s comedians don’t do funny like they use to”.

EHR: Can You Relate?

Email Humor Received from my equally aged-challenged good friend Jayne:

This is a story by David McClure from the Dallas News Community Opinion page..

$5.37.   That’s what the kid behind the counter at Taco Bueno said to me.  I dug into my pocket and pulled out some lint and two dimes and something that used to be a Jolly Rancher.   Having already handed the kid a five-spot, I started to head back out to the truck to grab some more change when the kid with the Emo hairdo said the harshest thing anyone has ever said to me.

He said, “It’s OK. I’ll just give you the senior citizen discount.” Continue reading “EHR: Can You Relate?”

EHR: Johnny Carson Sings

Email Humor Received from my dear friend Jayne…I sure miss Johnny, Sammy, Deano, and Frank.

This show was at Kiel Opera House in St Louis in June 1965, and was hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson had the Tonight Show and The Rat Pack were playing Vegas. This is supposed to be the ONLY time Carson sang in public. Look for Quincy Jones conducting the Basie band in the background.  Do not miss this performance, it can make your day !
