EHR: The New Orleans Saints Super Bowl Drinking Game

Email Humor Received (EHR) from _______ (I’m reserving that  name for now).

Mind you, neither Katrina nor the Haiti earthquake are laughing, to-be-taken-lightly catastrophies…but this game idea is funny. So lighten up, laugh at this and let it be my politically incorrect posting of the day/week/month/year.

This game suggestion reminds me of kegger softball, or the audience experience at the Rocky Horror Picture Show (although I’ve never had the “horror” of watching the show in a theatre).

This is also a classic example of the media ramming their agendas down the viewers throats to the gag point people start making jokes of it all…and speaking of throats, have a beverage of your choice in celebration of a Saints Super Bowl win….

BTW, the picture credit is not mine, but I list it as: SCOTT THRELKELD / THE TIMES-PICAYUNE Cousins Benji Soued, 4, of Boca Raton, FL, left, and Benjamin Soued, 2, of New York play football during a pre-Super Bowl party Sunday, February 7, 2010, at El Palacio Sports Hotel Convention Center. More than 500 Saints fans partied then marched to Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL

Schooled in CFB

December 6, 2009

So what if I missed the Big 12 Championship game last night, I was enjoying my company’s Christmas party and while there, too busy being confused with TV trivia being MC’d by our throwback 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s DJ (oh the agony of correctly stating the color of the Dukes of Hazard’s car when I was supposed to be guessing that of Starsky & Hutch’s – and loss of a randomly selected gift card on top of it!). But fear not my faithful (or one time) blog readers, I got caught up with the game’s outcome after reading all 4 pages of the Sunday Dallas Morning News. Continue reading “Schooled in CFB”

Uneven the Score

This past weekend saw a Dallas Cowboy’s team, with the highest NFL payroll at $151M± and a $1.2B stadium, beat a Washington Redskins team, with the 2nd highest NFL payroll at $112M±, by a score of 7-6. Oh Jerry, please let me give you my $400 for yet another lousy offensive performance on a Sunday afternoon at your new playhouse.

Those of you that read my column on a regular basis know of my preferences of high school and college football, and my disdain for professional football, basketball, and/or baseball players in general.

Here’s a big reason why: Continue reading “Uneven the Score”

Lew Perkins: “Embarrassed and very hurt”

HEY LEW, YOU SHOULD BE…FOR A LONG TIME!

This oh-so-sorrowful admission is “bull(spit)” that rivals some of the best NCAA insincerity ever mumbled by coaches in search of a conscience and the thug-athletes that might be aimlessly following him around. Perhaps I would have some sympathy for the Jaythugs, had it been a first-time incident. But last year, an athlete shot a Wal-Mart air rifle/plastic pellet/BB gun weapon at an innocent middle-aged woman (KU B-Baller Works on Shooting Skills – w/BB Gun)…out of his on-campus dormatory window. But that’s OK, right? He was disciplined for his indescretions…he got 20 hours community service…for shooting a human being, and still gets a free college education. I’m still trying to find a Lew quote on that incident. A Westside Story

Holy Cow, just when I’m getting into my “love college football”/”hate pro football” stride, punk-athletes once again show off their true colors. Unfortunately, the colors of their schools are the one’s being tarnished. Damn how I so wanted to rag on Jerry Jones instead….

Do I need to go into the “scholarship = free college education” schpeal again? I think not. Just this: “Hey you punks, don’t blow your future by getting kicked out before you get a diploma that might support yourself and family in the future”. Idiots.

“Your best entertainment value in town”

DSCF5254That’s a line I’ve used for years in closing the pre-game announcements and prior to kickoff of Lake Dallas High School’s “Falcon Football Friday Night”

Five times a year, I have a bit of fun doing the PA for home football games. None of my extended  family have heard “the voice of the Falcons” (keep in mind that this is what the athletic director has called me for a very long time…I’m still trying to figure out whether that’s a good voice or a bad one; he’s never really said). FS heard me last on the PA in the fall of 1999; FD heard me last year when she was back for her 10-year reunion; Deb…well she’s in that school of athletics-not-for-me. Her last time may have been when FD was cheering her senior year. Continue reading ““Your best entertainment value in town””

Yes it’s true…

…the Eagles have a Vick.

Please excuse my amateur attempt of humor in varying a line from Ghostbusters, but it is the professional National Football League, aka NFL – Nuts, Felones, and Lifers, that gives us the most humorless story of the week.

One of my favorite radio talk shows is a local duo – Ernie and Jay. Friday, they devoted much of their midday talk show to the NFL, Philadelphia Eagles, and Michael Vick.  Hey! How did he get out of jail, being a felone and all, long before the Jackson family decides to bury Micheal (and what’s up with that?)?

Game day lawnchairs

As a spectator I huddled in the corner of the athletic director’s conference room trying to note the many on-going playbook conversations while enduring a debatable presentation from a peer today for the landscaping of the new UNT football stadium. This post will not talk of the presentation because of my professional courtesy to her, but one active conversation did raise the cross bar in my mind. Had the play calling been a bit louder, the landscape discussion would have appreciatively been muffled. Continue reading “Game day lawnchairs”

BCFBFF Jai Jai

For those of you blog regulars (that are still with me), you know I have a good friend – Jai Jai – that seldom holds back on commenting on most of my postings. Ya gotta love her…agree with her, no…but ya do gotta love her.

Well she’s needing some blogger love, thoughts, and prayers. The girl’s advisors (doctors) decided to give her a surgery opportunity yesterday – a couple weeks ahead of time. Just know, she would probably rather have been talking college football over lunch than dealing with this “recruiting violation”. Some chronic health issues lead to yesterday’s surgery and this morning’s text message saying she’s “sore but I’m in good spirits” was welcomed. Atta a girl!

Passions, Preserving, Places to Play

Oh how I love these kind of discussions. Late last week, OFSIL, OFNi, and I exchanged commentary on sports venue histories, traditions, and personal perspectives. Realize that OFNi is still relatively young amongst the professional ranks but she has an obvious passion and definite opinion towards this subject(s). Now getting it out of her can be another story, sometimes. With this exchange she opened up a bit and showed me why I become more proud of her every day, and honored to call her OFNi. It goes without saying OFSIL (aka Mom) is more-so more-proud as she develops into a marvelous young lady, displaying her talent professionally, showcasing her passion, and exercising the expensive out-of-pocket education to the rest of our family, and perhaps to her very own colleagues (if she and Mom so chose to do so).

Below is the exchange. This all started with an OFSIL email to her circle of “others” regarding a CNN report on “great basketball towns”. I will stop short of an animated opinion of CNN so as not to diminish the value of content presented here, but know similar sports websites have published a very similar ranking in the past and I have yet to dispute their subject matter claims. What started out as a “yeah Allen Field House and KU” shared e-story evolved into a philosophical, psychological, and sociological discussion. Now that’s what I want this blog to really talk about – not KU, but “what’s up with that” type topics! (how ’bout a blog discussion on why our idiot politicians think it their responsibility to decide/mandate a college football playoff. Don’t even get me started with that one…yet, here, now).

I’m sharing the exchange knowing OFSIL will love it, but unsure of OFNi’s reaction. Why OFB (aka Dad) wasn’t included in last week’s exchange, don’t know. I’m sure he has been told of it by now however. I know he is equally proud of his daughter, and has never been one to shy away from an opinionated statement or two…or three. Maybe we just didn’t want to interrupt his personal quest to get the U.S. out of this recession. The family knows with this posting his “catch up” can be done during his leisure time. And we still expect the “slow-day-at-work” rhetorical question of all of us following his real topic-related response…not even Little Big Bro!

I look forward to your comments. Please tolerate the removal of personal names in the exchange in order to protect the opinionated. If you want to be known, or claim the opinion, you will have to do so through the “comments” process of blogging. This is lengthy I know (go get a fresh cup of coffee before diving in), but I hope you enjoy, or at the very least appreciate the spirited exchange. Cheating the game of golf

We’ve all shaved a few strokes, or maybe just didn’t count a few of our duffs, OB’s, whiffs, tee-taps, foot wedges, and shots into Dad’s golf cart cubby hole – I think I’ve written about that already – playing the so-called “gentleman’s game” (no offense intended lady golfers).  This article in today’s Dallas Morning News comparatively pales our minor offenses and is a better example of how cheating in this wonderful game does not make the recreation any more enjoyable. So count those strokes fellow golfers and remember this story of cheating on a golf course…I wonder if these guys will claim a “mulligan” in court? Continue reading “Cheating the game of golf”

Take a seat, sign here

Two things that have always irritated me about professional sports have been the attitudes of high profile “playmaker” pro athletes (in general) and audacity of most franchise owners (Pittsburgh Steelers’ Rooney may be the lone exception but he’s not entirely off the hook). The NFL is probably the most irritating in my mind. There is not many a day we have a media reprieve from the relentless shenanigans, felonies, whining, and center-staging by pro athletes; the dignity-reducing marketing of the franchise by owners; the building of bigger and better stadiums to house professional felons and egos.

The Super Bowl cometh

It’s coming on Sunday. Many watch the event more for the commercials than the football played – remember the Bud-Weis- er frogs?  This year, a 30-second ad will cost $3 million. Even though the economy is on the skids and regular advertisers like a certain overnight delivery courier has elected not to participate this year, good old Miller High Life has pulled off a marketing coup (one humble man’s opinion). They are doing the “one second ad”, saying that’s all they need to “remind viewers that Miller High Life is common sense in a bottle”. Continue reading “The Super Bowl cometh”

The humility (and irony) continues

A follow up on my previous blog: Oh the humility (and irony) of it all :

So the Christian-based The Covenant School apologizes and says it was wrong to stomp, kick, beat, maim, crew them up & spit ’em out Dallas Academy girls basketball team 100-0…

So the coach, Micah Grimes, says The Covenant School’s apologetic postion is absurd (my words used here)… Continue reading “The humility (and irony) continues”

Oh the humility (and irony) of it all

So yesterday I read about this girl’s basketball game in the Dallas Morning News…and today it’s home page news on Yahoo.com:

The game was last week between two private schools – The Covenant School (a Christian-based institution) versus The Dallas Academy (known locally for having notable success educating students with learning disabilities).  Anyone else find the teaching conflict (and irony) of a Christian school basically ignoring their Christian/Bible-based education philosophies, opening a can of whup, and dishing out a bucket full of wrath on their lesser opponent?

I’m still talking college football y’all

My faithful and interested bloggers that read this for my insight and sarcaism on college football…I’m still making snide comments on “Big 8+4” as well as “Saturday Football”. Be sure to periodically check out those pages. And so I will give this a try: participate in the poll “should I move my football rantings to another wordpress blog site or leave it here” tm Continue reading I’m still talking college football y’all
