Germanfest

Off I went Sunday afternoon to the Texas community of German hertitage, Muenster Texas to partake in the food and festivities of their annual “Germanfest”.

Muenster is about 75 minutes from the house and I enjoyed the three thunderstorms I managed to drive through safely to get there.

And once there, about three more downpours provided more excitement as they thundered through Muenster. The festival was ready for the weather however – numerous big tents provided shelter from the rain and 30mph north winds for all those in attendance that wanted the protection. The music kept playing and the homemade brats and kraut kept cooking despite the weather’s inclemency. Grand time! Continue reading “Germanfest”

The Day the Music Died

In an Iowa corn field 52 years ago today, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, The Big Bopper, and pilot Roger Peterson died in a tragic plane crash. Spared that night was Waylon Jennings who surrendered his seat to The Big Bopper, and backup musician Tommy Allsup by losing a coin flip with Valens for the other plane seat (In 1979, Allsup opened a Fort Worth nightclub called “Tommy’s Heads Up Saloon” as a tribute to his luck that night). It truly was a fateful night.

R.I.P. gentlemen – you’re music lives on, as Don McLean celebrates with his much interpreted/misinterpreted “American Pie”….

Where have all the basketballs gone?

Long time (not) passing…or assists…or scoring…or team play.

Please know, I show you this with an admittedly sour attitude (no kidding!) after watching a woefully played basketball game between my beloved (KSU) Wildcats and the Baylor Bears last night. It was a game where fouls were as abundant as turnovers and charging calls…What is it that seniors cannot figure out when to “Pull-en” up for the shot or “Pull-en” it out and set a play. Geezz! Hey Katy, Don’t Ever Look Back

OFNi Whitney is a champ at finding odd, funny, and sometimes even meaningful YouTube to share…well for that matter, all my nieces are champs at doing just that. I love my nieces as they keep me laughing and “hip” when it comes to current music (although they would most likely argue that last point).

Below is a Facebook posting shared by Whitters: this young man is just too funny not to keep sharing. +15 million hits on YouTube – you think he has a following?

Perhaps the lyrical content of KatyPerry’s song is not always welcome, but this kid is entertainment (or maybe he’s entertaining), especially the last minute of the video! Oh my belly hurts now.

And I don’t even want to know what apparel is on the bed over the kid’s right shoulder (don’t ever look back, don’t ever look back…LOL).

What Say You

Perhaps an appropriate song, especially after Tuesday’s politics.

I’ve always loved this song with its catch-tune and great lyrics…I sing it well in my truck and if no one is listening (but I sure get odd looks thrown my way).

If I silence (or lip-sync) my singing, you get the whole lot better version performed by 2 icons of the music business: Travis Tritt and John Mellencamp.

I’m not going to criticize what I can’t understand…

speak my heart and bear my soul, I don’t like lies, I would rather know the truth…

I know I’m not always right and I don’t think I’m better than you…”

Spoil the political fun, spare the video

On a recent friend’s Facebook posting, I endured this 10-minute drumming of political summary (10 minutes you guys…I’m just saying “pack a lunch” if you’re going to watch it). So as a courtesy to the original Facebook post, I have spared others my “comment” of lengthy reply to that YouTube “TRUTH” (however this blog is updated to Facebook daily so it will show up and allow for rebuttals at my expense, and not that of original post):

As most of my close friends and family (may) know, I have little patience for scare tactics, heavily-leaning militant politics, and grossly bias commentary that tells me what, when, and how to think…imagine that of me, a non-rebel…yeah right?

It all started with my lame attempt at cleverness, saying “TV commercials with clowns can scare (or laugh) the crap out of you….” as a comment to the video and posting lead-in of the YouTube “if this doesn’t scare the crap out of you I’m not sure what will.” My bad y’all…but have you seen those commercials lately? They are screamingly funny!

So I use my own media for this reply…. Continue reading “Spoil the political fun, spare the video”

Hallelujah

Last night’s televised “hope for haiti now” fundraiser was moving at times and inspirational. Besides the obvious need for the event, the music was a true delight. I celebrate and support both the cause and artistry of the night.

Being one that loves music and sometimes wishes a singing career would have been in the “chords”, I’ve learned to appreciate artists that perform with their heart and soul, and are not afraid to throw their emotions to the end of a long sleeve with songs that touch them in some way.

Last night and live, Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris had the performance of the night with their moving rendition of ‘Hallelujah”.

“Hallelujah’ is a song that can take center stage all by itself. The artist merely puts a melody and emotion to the words. I’ve sang this song myself, without much talent, but with conviction of one voice with a congregation in song knowing the stage is sometimes, something more than where the microphones are placed.

I went to bed last night thinking of the song and its lyrics…I got up this morning with it still on my mind. ‘Hallelujah’ has been a favorite of mine for some time, as it has been for many an artist as well. In searching iTunes and YouTube this morning, so many good versions of the song were found, done by professionals and amateurs alike, and performed in several languages. Life Lesson No. ???

There have been only a few television shows that strike at my core. As my family will attest, one of them (actually multiple series) has been annoying to the entire family – Star Trek (Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, Archer) – but then they only needed to get beyond the amateurness of acting and become one with the story line to truly appreciate the brilliance of the series.

Another favorite of mine is All in the Family. I love Archie. He reminds me of today’s right-wing Republicans that can never say a good or positive thing about…well, anything unless it deals with the increasing size of their wallet. One can only laugh in agreement or at the absurdity of the claims – there’s no middle ground with Archie.

But perhaps my all time favorite is The Andy Griffith Show. Even though I much-prefer the black & white, Don Knotts shows, never was an episode (black & white or color) aired that didn’t tell a life story or give a life lesson. And when Andy was doing the talking, it was golden…espicially if a very young Opie was at the receiving end of his lessons. Andy, the pillar of the community, the rock of reason, the class of the class, the good ‘ol boy that can relate to the bubba, is always bringing common-sense justice to the lives and purpose to the day’s events of Mayberry citizens .

See if you agree. Andy makes quick explanation and sense of a convoluted play, and re-tells a story of human nature and suggests a reasonable alternative to the problem. (probably not exactly what the playwright had in mind)  Continue reading “Life Lesson No. ???”

What he’s done – naada

Just in case you missed it, see the YouTube below of President Obama’s address to the Nation as to what he has thus far accomplished while in office. Ya just sometimes gotta love good SNL skits. It seems they (good skits) can get so far and so few in between these days.

One refreshing thing about Saturday Night Live, they usually will not pull punches on their satirical renditions (or meanness) of any one political party’s lunacy, or a celebrity’s stupidity.

Regardless of your political persuasion, this is funny. If not…lighten up would ya. Continue reading “What he’s done – naada”
