I remember that
Boy howdy does this remind me of a time when the kids were little. Deb was always baking made-from-scratch cookies – we always had cookies in the jar and on the counter!
Groomed and Relaxed Pups
A weekend full of it
Kettle enjoying
So it is that I got through the remainder of the pictures taken on the Canadian fishing trip last weekend. This was a really fun trip y’all. It is a time when all 3 sons got to spend some quality time together. Mostly, the three of us got to share the trip (and time) with Dad.
At this stage in each of our lives, we find ourselves pulling back together as a family. Our bonds seem to become stronger each time we are together. The joys, concerns, troubles, enjoyments, ribbings, teasings, adventures, journeys, trials, tribulations, risks, and sorrows we seem to share with each other more. What better people to share those with, than with family?
Kettling Growling
Something special was afforded me on our Canadian fishing trip this time. Not only did the four of us (dad and sons/brothers) get to spend time together, as a photographer I got to snap over 1500 photos in 5 days.
But perhaps the best part of it was when long-time guide Brian (Parker) at Halley’s Camps/Kettle Falls came up to me at the end of Fishing Day 3 with a proposition. It was one I could not refuse….
Kettle recapping
Check out the first set of the Canadian fishing trip photo collection. Some might be dups of what was posted over the weekend from the fishing camp, but what the heck, right? Halley’s Camps Canada Sept 2011 Continue reading Kettle recapping
Kettle Chilling
Man ‘o man. When a guy is used to 107 degree weather for the last 65 days living in Texas and he goes off to Ontario and wakes up to rainy, damp 45 degree weather…that’s chill’!
I bundled up with just about everything I brought. 2 pairs of socks, 2 pairs of pants, 1 undershirt, 1 shortsleeve shirt, 1 long sleeve shirt, a vest, and then a rain suit…and I still had a chill this morning boating to the first fishing spot.
Another great time on the English River. Fishing was better than yesterday. Shore lunch was “Franks” (Walleye fillet fast-marinated in Frank’s hot sauce, then breaded with 2 parts flour 1 part cornmeal…and then fried in as much lard as the pan holds). Oh good heaven’s my waist line is already expanding.
BTW, the turtle is a Snapping Turtle. Frank (one of our guides) told us we needed to leave him alone (for obvious reasons apparently). The Small Mouth Bass of Tony’s…that won him a Halley’s Trophy Angler Cap for it measuring 18.5″. Maybe that will make up for the one he lost in the lake yesterday.
Today’s pictures come from all 3 May boys…
Kettle Raining
The rain started about 3 am and it chased us all day long. We all stayed dry for the most part although the fishing was lousy – Tony and I caught more sticks than fish – and the lake claimed a number of our fishing lures.
Shore lunch was outstanding as usual. Had a blast – Dad and I watch a Bald Eagle swoop down for a dead fish about 40 yards from the boat…now that was pretty way cool. We went to the lodge after that show.
Kettle Falling
We made it into Kettle Falls at Halley’s Camps, Minaki Ontario…Dad, the two OFBs and me. Had a delightful dinner meal – 1/2″ thick sliced ham, scalloped potatoes, and a sliced apple crisp a la mode for desert. So much for my tonnage loss program for the next several days.
Look out Walleye, Pike and Smallies – we’re on the water tomorrow.
But tonight, we got the sights of a wonderful, cool evening with a setting sun and one of the guests brought in a black bear. This is gonna be fun…again (was here in 2009).
Irish Blessings Again
“May your thoughts be as glad as the shamrocks. May your heart be as light as a song. May each day bring you bright, happy hours. That stay with you all the year long.”
“May the Irish hills caress you. May her lakes and rivers bless you. May the luck of the Irish enfold you. May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.”
Hard boiled and hatched
Yesterday two things happened of any consequence. One was the last day of tax-free, back-to-school weekend bargains and the other was Hatch Chile – only the best chile out there – shopping day. But the chiles were NOT tax-free…a few were taxing on the taste buds however. Central Market was checked and OMG they had Hatch coming out there ears….
All the food photographed found its way into the shopping cart. Did I mention I love Hatch Chiles? I went crazy stupid on the photos, none of which I know will win an entry into Food magazine next month. But is it not interesting what all type of food can be prepared with the oh-so-versatile Hatch Chile? Continue reading “Hard boiled and hatched”
A mixed bag of Sunday
So many happenings today….
Even though Tommy wasn’t in the pulpit this morning, DBC was nonetheless humbling.
Even though oversized but wearable clothes were in the closet, Bass Pro got a bunch of my money (and the smaller sizes purchased brought a proud grin to my face).

Even though my tonnage-loss program is strict in the “oh-no-you-don’ts”, the three pulled pork nachos, 6 rooster tails (fried onion strips), chopped salad, and a couple bites of fried peach pie with homemade ice cream was absolutely divine.
Even though it was a cloudless, hot summer day, the sunset tonight was pretty…cool.
But it was my internet find with a Yahoo.com article this evening that caught my attention. Having just been involved with a pro bono design for a Veterans Memorial in my hometown, an article read (and heard) on the controversial 9/11 Memorial quickly drew my interest.
of sorts
And so it is that I boldly claim a small victory (as of yesterday). That tonnage-loss program…you know…that one that has occupied many a side comment in my postings of late has given reason to indulge in a DQ Blizzard or something (not really).
Well, my victory is the tonnage I’ve managed to lose off these weary bones and joints now equals my age (that’s my biological age, not the mental one).
Can you tell?

Happy Wedding
Long time, dear friends married off their oldest daughter tonight in an American ceremony laced beautifully with Japanese influences. We enjoyed the evening with the families at the Trammel and Margaret Crow Museum of Asian Art in Dallas.
Sing with me
Many times in my life, music has moved me emotionally and spiritually to places I never imagined. Tonight I reflect back on a dear family friend lost today. She was a special lady and mother to OFSIL Becky. Today also stirs memories from within our soul. It is music, this music in particular, that always seem to ease my spirit, conquer my thoughts, and soothe my welcoming heart. Watch them if you want, I do hope one of these five favorite songs of mine give some comfort to a grieving family. Continue reading “Sing with me”
Ham it up
For several months I’ve been asking folks what do you call people that do odd things in photographs, usually behind the primary subject’s focus. I been told they are “clowns”, “hams”, “_ _ _holes”, and “photo whores”. But of late, I’ve seen them called “bombers”…or maybe I should say the practice of stealing the scene is called “photobomb”. Continue reading “Ham it up”
Tune, handbag, but Harry has piano magic
Don’t ask what’s up with me and wonderful piano playing…I don’t know!
Well, on second thought, maybe I do know…It’s my mother’s fault.
Super Saturday
This has been a Saturday unlike others in recent memory.
We had the Hickory Creek Veterans Memorial dedication this morning. That, my limeyfishers, was an impressive service!
It got up to 105° this afternoon. Thankfully I had several hundred photos to go through and upload to Flickr.
Enjoyed an evening of praise music courtesy of the Glengormley Methodist Youth Choir (from Belfast, Northern Ireland). What fun, what inspiration!
And finally for the second night in a row, the Queen and I chased off a family of 4 racoons from our front yard (don’t you know, the Queen is very intolerant of any of her subjects being an nuisance and annoyance). Continue reading “Super Saturday”
Today I Like

It has been a day today. A day of routine and renewal, in a selfish sense…a day of family celebration both happy and sad. Coffee, haircut, therapy, work, birthday, health, and the girls (Mackie and Zoey that is)
The day begins: Continue reading “Today I Like”
