Sit back with a pint and give a listen to this lass

I’m sharing a couple YouTube videos of a lady I’ve been listening to for some time now; since about I first time Enya became a part of my CD library – that goes back a ways. OK, so I might be a bit gushy, sentimental, perhaps we’ll call it “unique” with my musical preferences (I can see many of you raising one eyebrow in question of my “taste” about now). Rest assured its my heritage coming through in my older age…maybe :).

Actually the FD says I’m quite eclectic with my taste. And I will say I take a certain amount of pleasure in her observation of that. You should hear the diverse genre of music in my MP3 sometime….

These songs below are Easy Listening ballad music from Ireland. This, my dear friends, is 1) music with an understandable and poetic message (for a change), 2) single-malt scotch-sipping singing-stuff, and 3) music that you might find yourself humming the melody or picking up on the chorus lyrics and joining in, maybe under your breathe at the very least.

I do that. You know when no one is listening, I’m really pretty damn good with my karaoke, if I do say so myself. In particular, imagine CUTster (any guesses with that acronym?) singing along quite loudly with a young pretty Irish lady, in full Irish brogue (attempted at least), with ear phones in and volume high, and Mackie Queen of Scots dancing a jig at my feet loving every minute of it (and she’s the only one that tolerates my singing). It’s a sight and sound for sore…senses, and my singing certainly won’t cure what ails ya laddy.

Ladies and gentlemen, for your listening pleasure; from the lovely green isle singing two of my favorites, the incomparable Ms. Mary Black: Continue reading “Sit back with a pint and give a listen to this lass”

Touring about town

Denton is always full of surprises. I love this town. It’s like this town is themeing photographs for me. WUWT?

Over the past few days it’s been antique automobiles. And it is a handful of automobiles that made me stop on three occassions to photograph. Only one of the stops (the Model T) afforded me the opportunity to actually talk with the automobile owner…and he was as much a character as his car. Continue reading “Touring about town”

The other side of the camera

One issue I’ve realized over the past several months is a lack of pictures. It’s not so much that I don’t have pictures – I actually have 4,565 of them so far this year since I’ve started this 365 / Picture-a-day thing.  I just don’t have a decent one of myself for posting to the blog.  Mind you, I have 293 pictures of OFGNi Madison; 353 pics of OFGNe Mick; and I have 26 of me. That ratio really doesn’t bother me whatsoever.

So if I want a picture in the sidebar of this blog, I’m kind of forced to choose a goofy one from my library (the one uploaded now is looking like I have gas and I’m self-humored because of it). Please know, I extend my sincere apologies for the creepiness pose in the left column even though I look like I feel better…the gas thing and all ya know. Roadways

Hey, hey, hey! Get on down the Roadway!

Have you seen the FD’s weblog lately? She and an Inca Trail buddy Suzanne are trying to establish themselves with YouTube “shorties” about town (NYC). I personally think they are about the best thing a traveler could listen to before going out on the town. Check out Roadways (I also have a permanent link off to the side, but y’all need to be using it). The girl they put in front of the camera is cute, funny, and will certainly bring a smile to your face. Continue reading “Roadways”

Natalie, and Amy, and Trenton, and Landon

OFBgrs: one of blog faithful could use a bit of healing thoughts and supportive prayers. Little Natalie had heart surgery on Thursday: see Amy’s Two under Two. A friend of Amy’s, Jenna, has updated her blog that Natalie’s surgery went well, but neither blog sites have since updated Natalie’s progress.

Amy, our OFGNe Eli’s heart surgery tugged heavily on all our hearts. With a successful surgery and recovery, he’s now more kiddo than can sometimes be handled…and we absolutely love it that way, as will you. Continue reading “Natalie, and Amy, and Trenton, and Landon”

Milestones to toss about

Last week marked a milestone for the TMay82 blog – it passed it’s 5,000th hit (if you have yet to noticed, at the bottom of the left column is a running total). This blog averages about 25-30 hits per day, and most of those come from a handful of  OFBgrs (yup…I’m adding a new blogism to the list: OFBgr = One Faithful Blogger).

Since blogging has a cool stats feature, it tells me what buttons can/should be pushed with my postings to generate the visits and comments.  This blog’s 98 postings has generated 215 comments across 32 different categories having 103 tags. What does that mean? It means I talk (write…some might say babble) alot. Continue reading “Milestones to toss about”

Simon says Susan

So I see this interview and performance on Good Morning America Thursday morning. I’m thinking this Susan Boyle is a hoot of an interview and definitely a talent in Britain – hope she continues to do good.

Then OFSIL SueB and Deb both send me this link later in the day so I can apparently watch it over and over (#5 and it hasn’t gotten old yet). Thank you ladies.

Ms. Boyle follows a surprise amateur opera talent from last year, Paul Potts. Maybe they will one day sing a duet together. Maybe I’m just a sentimental romantic, or maybe just a sucker for something about when good people have good things happen to them. (it’s so much way-cool-neater than having bad thing happen to them) Continue reading “Simon says Susan”

Professional oneupmanship

Here are a few “catch phrases of the day” from the day of conventioning with my peers. Why do we do this? Whenever we all get together in one place for more than a day, this always happens. We sometimes like to impress upon each other just how much we like to let people know…that we think we know what we’re talking about. Make your own definitions or ask me to explain further (if I remember…but then I can BS my way through my own definition letting you know how much I think you think I know…huh?): Continue reading “Professional oneupmanship”

Professional exercise –

OK faithfuls, a few minutes taken to finally check the health of the blog and I find myself doing so in an overpriced hotel room in Austin. Sorry for the pregnant pause in postings. Maybe I’m still trying to digest FB Tony and OFNi Dani’s comments on why it’s OK to knock down a piece of history….

image_017In town/out of town for a few days attending our professional society’s (Texas ASLA) state conference. It is also an opportunity to meet up with a few old friends, listen to others express a professional opinion or two in front of their peers, and also catch one’s breath away from the office politics, phones, and interruptions. Meetings like this are always “never a dull moment”. Continue reading “Professional exercise –”

EHR – $1000

From OFSIL SueM: If you had purchased $1000 of shares in Delta Airlines one year ago, you will have $49.00 today. If you had purchased $1000 of shares in AIG one year ago, you will have $33.00 today. If you had purchased $1000 of shares in Lehman Brothers one year ago, you will have $0.00 today.   But—- if you had purchased $1000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the aluminum cans for recycling refund, you will have received $214.00. Based on the above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily … Continue reading EHR – $1000

The people you see…

…when you don’t have your camera. Dag-gum-it!

I am usually one to carry one of my two cameras around no matter where I go. Others are amazed the places I take my cameras, and even more surprised of what  pictures I take at these strange places. This 365 picture thing I’m doing has created a monster…and another appendage.

We did lunch at The Loophole yesterday. Sitting there eating my glorious Felony Nachos, enjoying meal-time conversation with Rachelle and Nick, when who walks in the door? Continue reading “The people you see…”

The Big ONE

img_89031Weather was windy. Weather was rather chilly. Weather was climatically miserable. Family was there. Family was ready to party. Family was generally pleasurable.

OK…it was Mick’s 1st birthday last week Thursday, but we celebrated collectively on Sunday. Mick chose a day of 55° temperatures and a north wind gusting to 45 mph to gather everyone to watch him. Continue reading “The Big ONE”

Passions, Preserving, Places to Play

Oh how I love these kind of discussions. Late last week, OFSIL, OFNi, and I exchanged commentary on sports venue histories, traditions, and personal perspectives. Realize that OFNi is still relatively young amongst the professional ranks but she has an obvious passion and definite opinion towards this subject(s). Now getting it out of her can be another story, sometimes. With this exchange she opened up a bit and showed me why I become more proud of her every day, and honored to call her OFNi. It goes without saying OFSIL (aka Mom) is more-so more-proud as she develops into a marvelous young lady, displaying her talent professionally, showcasing her passion, and exercising the expensive out-of-pocket education to the rest of our family, and perhaps to her very own colleagues (if she and Mom so chose to do so).

Below is the exchange. This all started with an OFSIL email to her circle of “others” regarding a CNN report on “great basketball towns”. I will stop short of an animated opinion of CNN so as not to diminish the value of content presented here, but know similar sports websites have published a very similar ranking in the past and I have yet to dispute their subject matter claims. What started out as a “yeah Allen Field House and KU” shared e-story evolved into a philosophical, psychological, and sociological discussion. Now that’s what I want this blog to really talk about – not KU, but “what’s up with that” type topics! (how ’bout a blog discussion on why our idiot politicians think it their responsibility to decide/mandate a college football playoff. Don’t even get me started with that one…yet, here, now).

I’m sharing the exchange knowing OFSIL will love it, but unsure of OFNi’s reaction. Why OFB (aka Dad) wasn’t included in last week’s exchange, don’t know. I’m sure he has been told of it by now however. I know he is equally proud of his daughter, and has never been one to shy away from an opinionated statement or two…or three. Maybe we just didn’t want to interrupt his personal quest to get the U.S. out of this recession. The family knows with this posting his “catch up” can be done during his leisure time. And we still expect the “slow-day-at-work” rhetorical question of all of us following his real topic-related response…not even Little Big Bro!

I look forward to your comments. Please tolerate the removal of personal names in the exchange in order to protect the opinionated. If you want to be known, or claim the opinion, you will have to do so through the “comments” process of blogging. This is lengthy I know (go get a fresh cup of coffee before diving in), but I hope you enjoy, or at the very least appreciate the spirited exchange. Patriot Guard Riders escorting Veterans through Sanger

Yesterday was one of those unique opportunity days to experience and photograph – not a “One of those days” day like I posted Monday, but one to remember (in more ways than one) for sure. Co-worker Adam received and shared the following email:

FYI:  If you live  or can get anywhere near this, it will be an awesome sight to see!  They will be coming down 114 from DFW to 35W, then north on 35 to Gainesville.  Estimated time to leave DFW is 5:00 – all highways will be shut down to allow them to pass.  By the way, these are MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENTS coming to Gainesville for our annual event.  There will be 8-9 gentlemen being escorted img_8633in.  Channel 8 helicopter supposed to fly with them, at least part of the way.  There is indeed a Pearl Harbor veteran – John Finn, the oldest living survivor and MOH recipient.  He will turn 100 in July.  Find a safe spot to watch, and help us welcome them to our area!

This announcement is for those who wish to honor Veterans. The Patriot Guard Riders and several area police and fire departments will be escorting an unknown number of military war veterans from DFW Airport to Gainesville, Texas for a gathering to honor these veterans.  It is rumored that a Pearl Harbor veteran will be among these veterans.  It is estimated that 200 or more Patriot Guard Rider motorcycles will be part of the escort.  This will be the largest escort of it kind to move through our area.

One of those days

Ever had one of those days, with camera in hand you come upon so many odd photo opps? That was how part of my morning was spent in Little Elm – so much to photograph. All taken within minutes of each other. BYW, the Buffalo and the shored-up building were pictures taken in the soon-to-be wealthy town of Prosper (a few miles up the road from Little Elm)

Re-visit the Past, Favorites, Ideals, and Wishes

Every so often, one should clean out a closet or pantry just for grins. Deb did just that (for grins) to our pantry today but her intent was more for getting rid of expired dry foods and giving a sense of organization to the shelves. She accomplished her goal and came across a “family keeper” crumbled way in the back on the top shelf. Continue reading “Re-visit the Past, Favorites, Ideals, and Wishes”
